My New York
“In my
life, I have always painted, but I was drawn to New York
accidentally”.
This is the way that Laura Fantini, 35 years old,
from San Lazzaro, introduces her precocious career as an artist
who, from the Bolognese province, has gone directly to New York. “I graduated at the Liceo Artistico of Bologna and then…I went
to the Accademia delle Belle Arti. My first exhibition dates
back to 1992, at the Galleria Barozzi in Modena. Then, I started
working a lot both in Italy and abroad”. However, the biggest
change came in 1998. “I was a tourist in New York and stayed at
my relatives’. Right away, I was taken by the surrounding
landscapes which my art mirrored”. Laura’s work, indeed,
proposes a hyperrealism that embraces still life
and cityscapes,
linked by a light line that can influence the use
extraordinarily controlled by form and color.
“Of both subjects,
I prefer still life,” she explains, “but it was really love at
first sight seeing a city that by itself represents the classic
canons of hyperrealism and, I think, for example, of Hopper. Since 2001, I have been exhibiting in the Big Apple in Soho. First I worked with the Papp
Gallery and lately with the Object Image Gallery. In each
culture, the art world moves in a similar way,” she continues,
“but what differentiates New York from Bologna is the frenetic
speed with which things move. A greater confrontation with the
artists is possible and there are many meeting places to
exchange ideas here. In the future, I would like to work between
these two cities to which I am particularly attached, and
propose an exhibition featuring cityscapes from New York and
Bologna. The goal is to create a window through Italy”. Laura’s
achievements already represent a great accomplishment compared
to other young talented artists.
